Branches

The little girl in the tree is further away than the distance

From the branch to the ground

Sun-speckled face shadowed, changing, still

I heard tell that farther ought to be used for geographical distance

For the physical, the definite, the real

While further ought to be kept for the sense of emotional distance

The perceived, the subjective, the interior

I remember being that little girl in that tree, the frangipani tree where I felt comfortable enough to sleep and daring enough to climb to the top and swing from branch to branch with haphazard abandon. Now I am farther, further, forever away.

I should really find a tree to climb.
